Five Minute Poem

While at the NEXTChurch 2017 National Gathering this week, I attended a poetry workshop where we were challenged to create a poem inspired by a bible verse. We were given five minutes to create it.

"There is nothing hidden that will not be found. There is no secret that will not be well known." - Luke 8:17
I am a man with two sons.
    One is responsible.
        Little is lost;
            if it is, the world is at an end.
    The other is carefree.
        Much goes missing;
            and when it does, there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The school "lost and found" is like a treasure hunt.
    Will we find the diamond in the rough?
        The water bottle in the fleece pile?
    If so, there is unbridled joy in gleeful dance.

I am a man with two sons.
    One is responsible.
    The other is carefree.
If one of them is lost,
    I am at my end.
If he is found,
    the embrace is the embrace of life.
